The University of Pennsylvania is a landmark in American education, being the oldest university in the country. Despite its age though, the University of Pennsylvania is still one of the Ivy League schools as it regularly ranks among the top 5 universities in 2008, according to the annual U.S. News & World Report survey. Its prestigious Wharton School of Business has consistently ranked first amongst all MBA school for at least three years in a row now according to the Financial Times. The University of Pennsylvania is considered one of the most selective schools around. It is a beacon in innovative interdisciplinary education.
History: University of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania founder was none other than Benjamin Franklin, a beloved inventor and entrepreneur. It started when a trust was formed in 1740 to establish the Charity School of Philadelphia. By 1749, Franklin infused his innovation to what was then common among American Colonial colleges – that of preparing its students for clergy work. He envisioned a university that prepared students for business and public service. By 1750, Franklin and the first trustees of the University of Pennsylvania bought the school’s first campus, and at the same time assumed Charity School responsibilities. The two opened its doors in 1751.

University of Pennsylvania has housed several notable personalities. Several of those who signed the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were once associated with the school.
