In the college application process, writing college essays can be the most difficult part. College essays serve as gauge of your writing skills. More importantly, admission officers can get a glimpse of your personality through the topic you write about. Thus, it is very important that you choose your topic well.

Since admission officers receive and read a lot of essays yearly, it is advisable that you choose a unique topic and you don?t write about the same subjects as every other applicant would. Because of this, others are forced to think about deviating from conventions by employing unique writing styles and techniques and choosing topics far from what?s mundane. This can be considered as risky writing styles.

While the intent to be unique and stand out from the rest is good, remember that employing risky writing styles can be risky for your admission too. Therefore, you should be very, very careful.

Pros and cons of using risky writing styles

When it comes to college essays, there are topics that work and topics that don?t. While different colleges have varying opinions regarding good topics, bad ones, and risky ones, the key is to be very careful. Some topics that can be considered risky include death, drugs, friendship, personal relationships, and family problems, religion or philosophies, poetry, sex and other profanities, and sensitive mental issues.

A risky essay can border on the offensive; it can also give the impression that the writer is a risk-taker in the classroom. You really cannot tell how a risky writing style can work for you. However, it can also create controversy and keep the readers hooked. It can entice and encourage them to keep reading when they find your approach interesting.

How to effectively get away with a risky writing style for your essay

If you opt to take risks in writing your essay, you can pull it off by focusing on the facet of the topic that would matter or be beneficial to your readers. Show your passion in writing about your risky topic, or show yourself and your uniqueness by employing a risky writing style. They might be impressed on how you mustered courage and writing prowess to come up with an essay that?s far from the ordinary.
